Our easy Kalua Pig Loco Moco recipe is a must-try! If you don’t have pre-cooked kalua pig on hand, check out this recipe to make the easiest and tastiest slow cooker version. The recipe is so easy to do, but does take some time to slow cook the pork to perfection.

Also pre make some fresh cooked rice, medium grain is the best for this recipe. I use a mixture of brown and white rice for a bit of additional flavour and texture. Traditionally, plain white medium grain rice is used, but feel free to use the rice that suits you best.

Next make your gravy or use a pre-packaged gravy of your choosing to make this recipe even faster to prepare. Then cook a sunny-side-up or over easy egg just the way you like it. Pile fluffy rice onto a plate, top it with the smoky kalua pig and your egg, then generously ladle on the savoury gravy. Boom!   • 1 small frying pan
  • 1 small sauce pan


  • 1/2 cup kalua pig (pre-prepared)
  • 1/2 cup cooked medium grain rice (pre-prepared)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp oil for frying egg
  • salt and pepper to taste

Simple Gravy

  • 1/2 cup chicken stock (can also use beef stock)
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 tbsp flour
  • 1/8 tsp dried thyme (or other dried herbs to your preference)
  • salt and pepper to taste


  • Pre prepare your Kalua pig and rice.
  • Start with making your gravy. Over medium heat, melt butter in a small sauce pan and then add in the flour and thyme. Whisk together to form a paste. Slowly add in the stock and whisk until gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Next, cook your egg. Add oil to your frying pan on medium high heat. Break egg into the pan and cook until the whites of the egg have firmed up but the yoke is still runny.
  • Put hot cooked rice into a bowl. Top it with the kalua pig and pour gravy on top. Place egg on top of your kalua pig. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve while hot.
