What is Kalua Pig

Kalua pig (also called kalua pork) is a traditional Hawaiian dish featuring tender, slow-cooked smoked pork seasoned with Hawaiian sea salt. What makes it extra special? It is cooked in an underground oven called the imu where the pork slow cooks to juicy, smoky perfection.

Wrapped in banana leaves, nestled on hot rocks, covered, and left to work its magic for hours, this pork turns out so tender it practically melts in your mouth. Perfect for celebrations, gatherings, and lu’aus, Kalua pig is a delicious taste of Hawaiian tradition.

Join in on the fun and savour every bite of this mouthwatering dish that captures the heart of Hawaiian cooking!

Now you don’t need to cook a whole pig in an underground oven to get this tasty meat. Here’s the recipe for a simple slow cooked Kalua pig.

What is a Loco Moco

The Loco Moco is a true comfort food of Hawai’i, blending flavours into a satisfying, hearty dish. Picture this: a mound of steaming white rice as the base, crowned with a juicy hamburger patty, then topped with a perfectly fried egg, its golden yolk ready to burst. But that’s not all—this delicious creation is generously smothered in a rich, velvety gravy that brings all the elements together in a symphony of flavours. Each bite offers a delightful mix of textures and tastes, from the tender meat to the creamy egg yolk and the savoury gravy that ties it all together.

This Kalua Pig Loco Moco recipe is a twist on the traditional dish, which uses a hamburger patty. It takes it to the next level that will keep you coming back to make again and again.

Also pre make some fresh cooked rice, medium grain is the best for this recipe. I use a mixture of brown and white rice for a bit of additional flavour and texture. Traditionally, plain white medium grain rice is used, but feel free to use the rice that suits you best.

Next make your gravy or use a pre-packaged gravy of your choosing to make this recipe even faster to prepare. Then cook a sunny-side-up or over easy egg just the way you like it.
